Employee of the Month

amy stratton

Each month we will be asking you all to let us know who your employee of the month is. This can be any of our carers or team leaders.

All you need to do is send us an email or give us a call to let us know who you would like to nominate and what they have done to go above and beyond that month. Our management team will then make a decision and reveal it in the newsletter each month and the successful employee will receive a voucher.

Our very first employee of the month is Amy Stratton. Amy has been a complete angel all summer covering countless shifts sometimes at very short notice. We are so sad she has gone back to university now for her second year as a student nurse but we wish her the best of luck for this year!

Thank you so much Amy, you are an absolute star!!

Monthly Focus

Each month our management team will be looking at one of the CQC standards to ensure we are doing all we can to meet their requirements. We will be undertaking audits, spot checks, surveys and reviewing policies and procedures so we can ensure we are getting information from different points of views.

Each month we will be letting you know which standard we are looking at and the sort of things we will be focusing on. If you have any questions or would like to get involved any month please let us know.

For the month of November, we will be looking at what makes our service Safe. We will be reviewing a number of areas of our service including:

  • How we follow Safer Recruitment
  • Support Plans and Risk Assessments
  • Staff training relevant to ‘safe’

Christine’s Corner

christine's corner

Hello everyone and welcome to Christine's Corner!

Some of you already know me from working with your wonderful kids. Whilst others I'm extremely excited to meet. After a few years of working with Access All I have been given the exciting job of being an Activities coordinator.

This month we have lots of interesting things happening, it is of course Halloween and half-term which means lots of opportunities to try new things available in the community, Diwali will be lighting up our now darker days but also it is the start of a new season.

Halloween Activities

halloween activities

So, I think it is appropriate to start off with some good old fashioned pumpkin picking and Halloween decorating, below are four place where you can go to do this:

  • Foxes Farm - www.foxesfarmproduce.co.uk
  • Blake House Craft Centre - www.blakehousecraftcentre.co.uk
  • Lee Valley Farm - www.visitleevalley.org.uk
  • Old MacDonald’s Farm- www.omdfarm.co.uk

Dracula’s dentures these can also be changed to monsters as seen below, done by the fabulous Adam!! We found that using a small 5ml syringe to do the details and chocolate buttons worked beautifully (we have these in the office)! The teeth are made out of marshmallows.

Gooey jelly and worms Sensory and edible. You can hide all sorts of things in jelly and it makes for a great Halloween snack.

This month is also particularly special to me as I have planned an event of my own! It is called Cardboard Cinema and it is a Drive-In for Children, only you guessed it...their cars are fashioned out of the finest cardboard. All the profits will be going to CHILD.Org and you can find out more at https://www.facebook.com/CardboardCinema.org

I will be posting more on the Facebook soon! The poster is at the end of this newsletter.

Diwali Activities

diwali activities

These wonderful scented candle holders are a lovely activity to do regardless of if you're celebrating or not!

Take a look at this really easy henna recipe with things you may have lying around https://www.pennypinchinmom.com/diy-henna-tattoos/

Rangoli patterns can be cut out and stuck around the house and make for beautiful decorations and sensory play. https://nurturestore.co.uk/diwali-rangoli-patterns

Autumn Activities

autumn activities

These activities can be done by going on a long autumn walk or trail or can simply be enjoyed by going outside in your garden or for a quick stroll down the road and the best thing is that they are super easy to do!

Painting with leaves: http://meaningfulmama.com/day-291-fall-leaf-prints.html

Pinecone bird feeders: For our birdy friends (or naughty squirrels) https://www.freebiefindingmom.com/easy-fall-crafts-using-pine-cones/

Sensory jars: Simple but effective https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/fall-sensory-bottles-for-exploring-nature/

Now no autumn is complete without dens. These can be made indoors or outdoors and fun for everyone to get involved!

Compliments

We would like to highlight a few team members for going above and beyond this month.

Over the last few weeks one of our service users was taken ill and we would like to thank those members of the ABR team for their extra support and efforts during this time. It was really appreciated by management and the family...you’re all stars!!

We would also love to recognise Chloe Fordham, as we have received fab feedback from both staff and families about the work you have been doing. See below some of the comments we have received:

“As a young carer she has a such great attitude and we really love her”

“She is very helpful and forward thinking, and I hardly ever have to ask her to do anything because she has already done it.”

Monthly Focus

Each month our management team will be looking at one of the CQC standards to ensure we are effectively meeting their requirements. We will be undertaking audits, spot checks, surveys and reviewing policies and procedures so we can ensure we are gathering information to reflect the views of our families and staff teams

Throughout November we have been looking at what makes us a Safe Service. We have carried out spot checks on our staff who administer medication. We undertook a review of all staff and client files to ensure that documentation was completed and up to date and we looked at how records are kept with particular focus on how we respond to incidents. We will be looking at the full report at the next management meeting and implementing any changes over the next few weeks.

If you would like to see a full copy of the audit report please send us an email. For the month of December, we will be looking at what makes our service Well Led.

Flu Vaccination

NHS England have announced an extension of their seasonal influenza vaccination to include social care workers. This mean our staff are now eligible to receive the flu vaccination. Please find below the information about where you can get this from:

Where can eligible staff get their vaccination?

Most community pharmacies and many GP practices are providing flu vaccinations. We recommend that staff contact their community pharmacy or GP practice to check they are providing the service before attending. For GP practices, this needs to be the member of staff’s registered practice.

What ID should staff take to their pharmacy/GP to be vaccinated?

Eligible staff will need to take appropriate ID which shows their name and their employer such as an ID badge, letter from their employer or a recent pay slip.

Changes to Data Protection Regulations

Since 1995 any organisation handling personal data has had to comply with the Data Protection Regulation, however from 25th May 2018 we will be required to comply with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This new regulation intends to strengthen and unify data protection for all. We are currently starting to gather information about the steps we need to take to become compliant with this regulation and will implement any changes before May 2018. Any changes to the way we store or handle your personal data will be communicated to you.

ICare Ambassador

As you are probably all aware I recently undertook an interview with the CQC which I am, pleased to say I passed! I am really looking forward to working with you all in my new role as Registered Manager and wish Amy all the best on her Maternity Leave.

In my first week as Registered Manager I attended a Registered Managers 'meet up' to share practice and ideas with other Registered Managers in the area. In this meeting, we discussed the need for a nationwide recruitment of staff in the social care sector and how to encourage and inspire young people to train and develop a career in the social care sector. As this is something we at Access All feel very passionate about I have signed up to become an "I care...ambassador". This role will entail me speaking to people in schools, colleges, universities and in other organisations to encourage people to research and peruse a career in this sector. For our staff, I have attached the poster to the end of the newsletter so take a look and let me know if you are interested in this role please let me know.

Well a warm hello to everyone from Amy and myself and welcome once again to our monthly newsletter. We’re hoping that you are keeping toasty warm as winter seems never to end at the moment! Roll on spring and the warmer weather.

Our office was very busy this month with lots of different training courses being undertaken and we would like to thank to all our staff team and trainers for their hard work and enthusiasm. It made for a very noisy and active office and it was lovely to have the opportunity to see so many of the team together learning and having fun.

For those of you on half term holidays we hope you had the chance to enjoy some fun activities as well as to have a well-deserved rest, even a lie in if you were lucky. We’ve had reports of staff members getting very stuck in the mud on the Stick Man Trail – much to everyone’s amusement.

Our new website continues to receive fabulous feedback from far and wide and we must say how photogenic you all are!!! So much so that we’ve just noticed River Island clothing has launched a new campaign celebrating diversity and Amy and I think we should consider starting a model agency as a side line as you’re all such wonderful models!!!
